About Tourism Bell Island

Tourism Bell Island was formed in 2009 in an effort to develop a new economy for the island. The loss of iron ore mining in 1966 devastated the island reducing its population from 15,000 to a little over 2200 as it stands today. Through the years, many schemes have been hatched only to be discarded. Projects such as storing toxic waste and oil in the mines to returning to mining iron ore once more were given consideration.

Tourism Bell Island has taken an entirely different approach to the re-birth of Bell Island. The not-for-profit group envisions a three pronged approach to economic renewal. Tourism, Agriculture and a collective approach to our culture, folklore and dynamic history are those three prongs. We are going to develop our strengths and what we have and build our economy and our town from within.
